Bike Month is Here! And boy do we have a wide variety of activities going on around town.

Starting today May 1, and each Thursday in May, Bike Habitat is conducting bicycle repair clinics. Call to make reservation.

Friday, May 9: Bike Habitat will host a Commuters Forum in the evening.

Saturday, May 10: The Bike Smith will hold their annual Safety Inspection/Bike Fit/Flat Tire Fix event in their parking lot from 10 am – 2 pm

Later that evening is Movie Night at Comma Coffee. “Off Road To Athens” will be the feature.

Though not an actual event, on Monday, May 12 Carson City Supervisor Shelly Aldean will hop on the back of my tandem (I can’t believe she said yes!) for a fun ride from her house to her office.

Another FUN event on the schedule is the “Historic District Social Ride“. Wednesday, May 14, we’ll meet at the Brewery Arts Center and Muscle Powered will guide us on a FUN, low-key ride through old town Carson City.

Friday, May 16 is Bike to Work Day. Many numerous events going on around town, including Commuter Stations, free bus service from JAC, and the grand finale raffle, where we’ll give away a KHS Urban-X commuter bike donated by LUMOS & ASSOCIATES, with help from a Bicycle Authority “Bro deal” (Thanks Dan!).

Joining us at the Firkin & Fox for the raffle will be a very special preview performance by African drum and dance group, Anouaze Beat.

I mentioned preview because one week later on Saturday, May 24 the full ensemble will be performing at the Brewery Arts Center. Don’t miss it!

And if that isn’t enough, Sunday, May 18 is the Tour of Carson. Celebrating the one year anniversary of the Bike Habitat, Denis Coyne will lead us on a fun, moderately paced, unsupported bike ride around the Capital city. WHEW!

Check our calendar for detailed descriptions of our events.

P.S. Our three area bike shops are offering discounts during Bike Month:

Bicycle Authority – 15% off when you mention Bike Month

The Bike Smith – 15% off when you mention Bike Month

Bike Habitat – you’ll receive discount coupons when you attend any of the clinics hosted by Bike Habitat.

So please join us and have some FUN!

WE CAN – WALK CARSON CITY

Seems pretty obvious right? Sure we can, but will we? Do you know where all the great walks are?

Well, we’re going to add a series of articles, each one outlining a walk in or near Carson City, appropriate for families to our blog. Each one should take 30 minutes to 1 hour to complete and will be of varying levels of difficulty. There are 26 walks. Surprised? Can you name them all?

Why are we doing this? Childhood obesity is on the rise and recent studies have shown that 6-12 year old girls need about 12,000 steps a day, boys 15,000 to maintain a healthy weight. In an effort to fight this 21st century epidemic Muscle Powered is collaborating with We Can, to encourage families to get outside, get some exercise, enjoy our beautiful city, and interact in a whole new way.

We Can (Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity & Nutrition): In April 2007, National Institute of Health established the We Can to help cities and counties across the nation mobilize their communities to prevent childhood overweight. We Can! Cities or Counties pledge to offer We Can! evidence-based obesity prevention programs to parents and youth in collaboration with community-based partners. Carson City elected to become a We Can Community. As a part of We Can, Carson City is encouraging family physical activities, like these walks.

We all know how important exercising is and we’re all worried about our weight and health. So how do you find the time, pry the kids away from the computer, TV, video game? As difficult as it can be sometimes, it’s just a matter of making that commitment for your children or grandchildren. Add it to your calendar. After all, isn’t your children’s and your health just as important as any other meeting or commitment?

But walking should not be a chore for you and a bore for the kids. As first a child, growing up in rural San Diego County, then as a mother of two, and now as a grandmother I have a fair amount of experience with kids on a walk. There are several ways to make it FUN!

Kid’s love competition. Purchase pedometers for each family member. The kids can then visualize how far they go and compare themselves with their brothers and sisters or friends. These small devices clip onto your belt or waistband and count every step you take. Check any sporting goods store or Target or Wal-Mart. I’ve even seen them for as low as $5.00 on line.

For the under six crowd the ‘I bet you can’t make it to that tree’ and ‘What do you think is around that corner’ are very effective motivators. Also when the whines start, try marching, the Hup! Two! Three! Four! often work. But do remember that those little legs often have to take 2 steps for your one. Thirty minutes or ½ of a mile are usually the starting limits. Work into longer walks gradually.

For the older crowd taking along a flower or bird book can be entertaining. On some of these walks an animal foot print identification book is very good. Another way to entertain is to make up stories about things that are seen along the way. Better yet let the kid’s create their own stories. “What do you think lives in that hole in the ground we just saw?” Let their imaginations soar and enjoy this time together.

What to Wear for Your Bicycle Commute

Bicycle Commuting Series – Chapter 1

What to Wear for Your Bicycle Commute

In preparation for Carson City’s Bike to Work Week, I’d like to begin a series on Bicycle Commuting. The target audience for this series will the beginning bicycle commuter, riding round trip distances of 1 – 12 miles. Bicycle commuting in Carson City is actually quite easy, but if you’ve never done it before, you may have questions or misconceptions on what riding to work is all about.

Thanks to cycling celebrities like Lance Armstrong and racing coverage on TV, many people associate bicycling with tight spandex skin suits in an array of obnoxious color combinations. This type of clothing is at home on the race course or for use in high performance riding, but certainly not needed for bicycle commuting. Bicycle commutes around town tend to be of a short duration and ridden at a casual pace, so springtime casual street clothes or office wear work fine.

Ready for the Big Commute

The above picture is of me before a recent morning commute. Temperatures were in the low 40′s, with winds from the SW at 10 mph. I wore jeans, long sleeved work shirt, windbreaker, wind gloves, light wool hat, helmet, and sunglasses. Not only was I plenty warm, but I was already dressed for work, wearing clothes that I’d feel comfortable visiting a local business in. You’ll also notice the Velcro strap on my right pant leg. This keeps my pants clean and away from the teeth on the chain ring.

Since I don’t like to carry everything I’ll need for the day on my back, I keep some items at work. Some of the items I store at work are a jacket (for going to meetings or cold office temperatures), office shoes (office shoes are not always the best bicycling shoes), and a few articles of clothing to protect me from the elements should the weather change drastically. It may take a couple weeks, but eventually you’ll learn what you need to carry with you, and what’s more convenient to stash at the office.

Another misconception is that riding a bicycle to work will make you sweaty and stinky. As long as you don’t overdress and keep a moderate pace, you can keep your body heat at a normal temperature. I usually slow way down on my last quarter mile stretch. This gives me a chance to cool down a bit and slow my breathing. If I do perspire a bit, I’ll freshen up with a damp paper towel. I’ve heard that some people like to use baby wipes too. Perspiration is usually due to the fact that I’m having too much fun and racing around!

Dressing for your bicycle commute does not need to be a humiliating experience. There are some companies that are exploiting this fear to keep you driving like State Farm Insurance or Farmer’s Insurance!  Don’t listen to them.  Dress normally, comfortably, and have a good time!

Public Transportation

Public transportation is great, but there is no substitute for the freedom of walking or riding a bicycle.

Transportation using your own power. Self reliance.

Public transportation isn’t very popular in Carson City, but here’s an example of the other extreme from the other side of the globe!
