Multi-use path open!

The path crosses under the freeway

The path crosses under the freeway

The multi-use path is open from Roop Street to Moffat Open Space. The western section, Linear Park, is now joined to the eastern section from Moffat Open Space near Mexican Ditch. The middle section was part of the Phase 2A of the Hwy 395 freeway that just opened. The path crosses under the freeway alongside Eagle Creek.

This 2.8 mile trail offers close up views of the ditches along Linear Park and the creek that eventually flows into the Carson River (often called Eagle Creek, but it has no official name), with willows, cattails, cottonwoods and a lot of birdlife. This is a less developed part of the valley, and it feels like you are a long ways away. Once the cottonwoods come back along the “Eagle Creek” wetland, this should be a really beautiful ride. The Linear Park section has several interpretive signs. The new section, just opened a few days ago, is already getting quite a bit of bicycling and walking use. Read the rest of this entry »

“by bike” directions in Google Maps???

Google Maps has long offered “by car” directions, later added “walking,” and there are now a number of cities that have “by public transit.” The transit directions depend on some very complex databases created by transit agencies which include bus and light rail routes, stops, and times. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a “by bike” option? Of course you can get some information from the existing car directions, but it does not include routes that bikes can take but cars cannot, such as multi-use paths and passthroughs that connect neighborhoods for walkers and bikers. It also doesn’t take into account the quality of the route, such as the level of bicycle facility (bike lanes, shared lanes, narrow streets, traffic volume, number of turning vehicles) which all affect bicycling efficiency and safety.

New bike lane on Winnie Lane

BicycleLaneWinnieAlong with the recent slurry seal (repaving) projects going on in the northwest part of Carson City, which is part of the city’s effort to preserve and extend its road investment, Winnie Lane between Carson Street and Mountain Street was striped with bike lanes. The stripes are bright, and the lane is marked with the bike symbol. The lane was even done correctly as it approaches Carson Street, with skip lines (broken or dashed) to indicate a merge of traffic to the right turn lane. This is how it is supposed to be done! Winnie Lane to the west of Mountain Street is already designated a Principal Route (green) on the Carson City Bicycle Route Map (see Resource page above for links). Winnie Lane to the east is wide enough for safe bicycling, but then you get to Roop Street, which is not yet, but may be in the future as a project to the north will add a path and to the south there may be re-striping or shared lanes to make it safe.

Thank you, Carson City Public Works, for the new bicycle lane!

World Carfree Day

carfree_dayEvery September 22, people from around the world get together in the streets, intersections, and neighbourhood blocks to remind the world that we don’t have to accept our car-dominated society.

But we do not want just one day of celebration and then a return to “normal” life. When people get out of their cars, they should stay out of their cars. It is up to us, it is up to our cities, and our governments to help create permanent change to benefit pedestrians, cyclists, and other people who do not drive cars. Let World Carfree Day be a showcase for just how our cities might look like, feel like, and sound like without cars…365 days a year.

As the climate heats up, World Carfree Day is the perfect time to take the heat off the planet, and put it on city planners and politicians to give priority to cycling, walking and public transport, instead of to the automobile.

Carson City Freeway Ride

Freeway Ride
Carson City Freeway Ride

September 19th was the first and last opportunity for cyclists to check out the new section of freeway connecting Highway 50 to Fairview Drive. The new section of the freeway is not open to cars yet, but NDOT put on a special event that allowed the public to be the first to check it out on bike or on foot. People showed up by the hundreds to take advantage of this big event, and Muscle Powered was there to assist with a Free Bike Safety Check.

Bike Valet September 19

FarmersMarket2The first part of the morning, the bike valet at Carson City Farmers Market was pretty empty and I was about to pack it up and go home, when suddenly a flurry of people showed up, most of them after participating in the freeway bike/run/walk event. At one point we had 17 bikes parked. We got two new memberships, and had several good conversations. – Dan

A Bicycle Friendly Carson City?

Bicycle lane on Deer Run Road

Bicycle lane on Deer Run Road

A group of Muscle Powered members and others is embarking on an effort to achieve Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) status for Carson City with the League of American Bicyclists.

A planning team composed of Jeff Moser (Muscle Powered President and BikeCarson blogger), Mark Kimbrough (Tahoe Rim Trail Association and Nevada Bicycle Advisory Board member), Ann Macquarie (Muscle Powered member), Tim Rowe (Alta Alpina Bicycle Club and Nevada Bicycle Advisory Board chair), Denis Coyne (Bike Habitat owner and former teacher), Ty Polastri (Tahoe Bicycle Coalition and leader of the effort that resulted in BFC status for South Lake Tahoe), and Dan Allison (Muscle Powered member and Safe Routes to School Coordinator for Carson City) has met several times and is moving forward. Our next steps are to meet with Mayor Bob Crowell to introduce the idea – he has already expressed interest, to gather letters of support for BFC from the community, and to develop a presentation for the Carson City Board of Supervisors. We will also be keeping Carson City Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and the Sheriff’s Office informed of our efforts.

The process of applying for and receiving BFC status is complex and takes some time, but we may be able to achieve it as soon as spring 2010.

If you would like to help with this effort, please contact Dan Allison, srts.carson@gmail.com or 775-997-4937.
