A group of Muscle Powered members and others is embarking on an effort to achieve Bicycle Friendly Community (BFC) status for Carson City with the League of American Bicyclists.

A planning team composed of Jeff Moser (Muscle Powered President and BikeCarson blogger), Mark Kimbrough (Tahoe Rim Trail Association and Nevada Bicycle Advisory Board member), Ann Macquarie (Muscle Powered member), Tim Rowe (Alta Alpina Bicycle Club and Nevada Bicycle Advisory Board chair), Denis Coyne (Bike Habitat owner and former teacher), Ty Polastri (Tahoe Bicycle Coalition and leader of the effort that resulted in BFC status for South Lake Tahoe), and Dan Allison (Muscle Powered member and Safe Routes to School Coordinator for Carson City) has met several times and is moving forward. Our next steps are to meet with Mayor Bob Crowell to introduce the idea – he has already expressed interest, to gather letters of support for BFC from the community, and to develop a presentation for the Carson City Board of Supervisors. We will also be keeping Carson City Public Works, Parks and Recreation, and the Sheriff’s Office informed of our efforts.

The process of applying for and receiving BFC status is complex and takes some time, but we may be able to achieve it as soon as spring 2010.

If you would like to help with this effort, please contact Dan Allison, srts.carson@gmail.com or 775-997-4937.
