Hot Springs shared lane

share the road sign on Hot Springs

Hot Springs Rd was reconstructed last year between Carson St and Roop St. Though Muscle Powered had asked that bike lanes be included, the city felt that there was insufficient right of way to add bike lanes. Instead, they signed the section with “share the road” signs. This is not an official shared lane according to the MUTCD, which requires at least 14 feet for a shared lane, so it will not likely receive the “sharrows” or shared lane pavement marking.

I have observed bicycle use on this section of road, and I use short pieces of it nearly every day since I live in the north end of town and it provides access to Roop St and to Carson St. Experienced bicyclists seem to be comfortable using the road and sharing the lane with vehicles, but I’ve seen almost no inexperienced bicyclists on the road. They instead use the sidewalks. Bicycles on sidewalks is not the end of the world, so long as riders are alert, respectful, slow down and inform pedestrians before passing (with voice or bell), and remember that pedestrians always have the right of way. Nevertheless, it would have been better to provide separate facilities for bicycles.

The section does have nice sidewalks along both sides, which were mostly missing before, and I see a lot more pedestrians now. Quite a number of people now walk here for school bus access, Safeway, the gas station convenience store, the Walmart shopping center, and other destinations.

New sidewalks for Empire

New Entrance Sidewalk

New entrance sidewalk and crosswalk

Note: This entry was previously posted on the SRTS blog, but that blog is being phased out, and I thought this would be of interest to Muscle Powered people as well.

The sidewalk work around Empire Elementary is complete. The work was contracted by Carson City Public Works, and completed by Garcia Construction, with most of the funding from a Community Development Block Grant. This grant was specifically awarded because it targeted a low income neighborhood and school. Though the Safe Routes to School program certainly encouraged this project, credit goes to the city and particularly Patrick Pittenger.

Sidewalks were added along the north side of Stanton St all the way from Fairview to the school, and new walkway into the school was constructed, ADA ramps were placed at many corners on Stanton St, Monte Rosa St, Gordonia St, Siskiyou St, and Douglas St. Crosswalks have also been repainted in much of the neighborhood, particularly the ones students use on their way to and from school. Not only does this project make is easier and safer for students to walk to school, it gives a nice feeling to the whole neighborhood.

Old Clear Creek Rd bike lane

Bike Lane on Old Clear Creek Rd

As part of a recent project to reconstruct part of Old Clear Creek Rd and enhance Fuji Park, there is now a bike lane on the south side of Old Clear Creek Rd between Carson St/Hwy 395 and Vista Grande Blvd. There was already a bike lane on the north side of Old Clear Creek. Along the boundary of Fuji Park and the Carson City Fairgrounds, diagonal parking and a bus pullout lane were added, along with landscaping of rock, trees, and shrubs. Wide, inviting sidewalks were also installed.

This section of road, shown on the Carson City Bicycle Route Map as alternate (yellow) could now be upgraded to principal (green). Though it has not yet been designated or signed, this section is a logical continuation of Bicycle Route 395 which now ends just before it reaches Carson St/Hwy 395 at the signal intersection on Lupin Dr. There are plans for a bike route southward along Vista Grande Blvd to connect with Jacks Valley Rd, but it was assumed that this would be completed as part of the development the retail area which has ceased for now.

Fewer Cars = Healthier Kids

Another interesting post on Streetsblog New York, this time about research that correlates proximity to traffic with kids health.

“Children living within 150 meters of high-traffic areas were found to have, on average, BMIs five percent higher than those living near low-traffic areas. The researchers put forward two explanations for why high traffic contributes to obesity. The first is that real or perceived danger from cars reduces walking and biking. The other is that too much traffic contributes to high asthma rates, which make physical activity more difficult and less frequent.”

Democracy demands… the speed of a bicycle

“High speed is the critical factor which makes transportation socially destructive. A true choice among practical policies and of desirable social relations is possible only where speed is restrained. Participatory democracy demands low-energy technology, and free people must travel the road to productive social relations at the speed of a bicycle.” – Ivan Illich, Energy and Equity, 1974.

2010 Northern Nevada / Tahoe Regional Bicycle Summit

On February 3rd, 2010, Muscle Powered and Bike Carson attended the 2010 Northern Nevada / Tahoe Regional Bicycle Summit in Reno, hosted by the University of Nevada Reno Cycling Team and the Tour de Nez Outreach. Over 40 cycling groups met in the UNR Student Union to give a brief presentation of who they were and what they were working on. The groups represented just about all the facets of cycling that you can imagine, from racing, advocacy groups, trails organizations, city and state government, urban planning, law enforcement, on and off road cycling clubs, disabled groups, various causes, and more!

Bike Summit
Post Meeting Social: Mike Henderson, Colin Loretz, Nico Aguilera

Each group did around a 5 minute presentation, and by the end, I think everyone was pretty amazed at how many people are putting in their time to make cycling better in Northern Nevada. Rather than try to discuss all that was presented, I’ve compiled a list of attendees with links to their organizations. Some groups weren’t able to attend, and others showed up that aren’t on the list below, so let me know if your group is not represented or if the links are not accurate. I wasn’t able to find links for all the groups, but it’s nearly complete. Go explore these links and see what’s going on in Northern Nevada! It should keep you busy for a while…

A Special Thank You to Tim Healion, Executive Director of the Tour de Nez Outreach Organization. Thanks for getting us all together and directing the summit!
