Google Maps gets bicycling directions

googlemapsGoogle Maps finally has a beta of bicycle routing!

The League of American bicyclists has a press release / post on their blog. The link for Google Maps indicated in the blog takes one to a map centered on San Francisco, showing a large number of bicycle routes. The video explains that the dark green lines are bike paths, the light green lines are streets with bike lanes, and the dashed green lines are recommended routes. These are available on the Bicycling layer, so they can be browsed as well as used for routing.

In Carson City, there are only two bicycle routes shown, Route 395 from Murphy Dr to Kings Canyon Rd, and a small piece of the Route 6 multi-use trail in Moffat Open Space. These are two corrections I had submitted recently to Google. I will see how I can get the rest of our bicycle route information into Google, and hopefully they will send their “street view” bicycle here sometime in the future.

This is only the first step, but it is exciting.

Bike Month 2010 Announcement

Spring is just around the corner, and that means it’s time to start thinking about Bike Month in May! Carson City will be observing Bike to Work Week May 17th – 21st, which places the event a bit later in the month than last year. The plan is to spread out the events throughout the entire month, with some activities before and after BTWW. Last year, we stacked events back to back leading up to BTWW, and it was exhausting! I think most people were burned out by the end of the two week celebration. I know I was! So expect more breathing room this year between events. The plan is to keep the momentum going after BTWW is over, and KEEP people on their bikes.

It’s also time to start thinking about building your Corporate Challenge teams. We had a fantastic challenge last year! People were really excited about this event. Last year Carson City Corporate Challengers completed 1,240 trips by bicycle or by walking, and there were 3,978 miles walked or ridden through the week! I expect this year to be even bigger.

May will be chocked full of fun bicycle events.

Last year we had a lot of help from volunteers. If you’d like to help out, or have some good ideas for events, Muscle Powered would like to hear from you. Stay tuned for a Bike Month meeting.

First Muscle Powered Ride of the Year

On March 7th, we had the first in a series of Muscle Powered sponsored rides. Riders met up at Bowers Mansion, and then headed south for a couple loops around Franktown Road. It turned out to be a beautiful morning, a landscape in seasonal transition.   Fresh wintry snow in the mountains provided the backdrop for the spring meadows of Washoe Valley. Horses munched lazily on the new green shoots. A fresh hatch of midges rode with us coming back along Old 395.  Anglers lined the edge of the pond at Wilson Commons Park. The world is waking up from winter.

This was the first ride of the year for some of the riders. The Franktown loop is the perfect ride for waking up the winter legs with its gentle rolling terrain. Traffic was extremely light and allowed for relaxed riding and socializing. A perfect day out!

Although not on the calendar yet, ride leader Vickie Pritchett plans to have another ride this coming weekend (March 13th-14th). Time to get that bike out! Stay tuned for full details.

To participate in these rides, you must be a Muscle Powered member. Not only does membership with Muscle Powered allow you to participate in Muscle Powered exclusive events like walks and bicycle rides, memberships and donations provide the primary source of funding for Muscle Powered projects. Additionally, larger membership gives us more clout and influence in city projects. A membership form can be found HERE. Vickie should have some membership forms available at the beginning of the ride as well.
