Carson City Corporate Commuter Challenge

The driving force behind Bike to Work Week is the Corporate Commuter Challenge. This year, Carson City cyclists completed 987 trips by bike and logged in 3,234.26 miles! Big change happens from many people doing little things.

Bicycle Friendly Community

On May 20th, Muscle Powered’s Dan Allison went before the Carson City Board of Supervisors and gave them our Bicycle Friendly Community presentation.  In the end, the Board voted to sign the action plan to become a BFC, and had many good things to say about Muscle Powered’s efforts in our community!  Here is the recent press from the Nevada Appeal:

Muscle Powered receives the “Silver Dollar” award from the Nevada Appeal!

Silver dollar: To Muscle Powered, a local group dedicated to increasing biking and walking in Carson City. They received support from the Board of Supervisors to make a formal application to the League of American Bicyclists for Carson City to receive an official designation as a Bicycle Friendly Community. This is one of several movements afoot that could bring positive attention and tourist dollars to Carson City, along with the V&T Railroad and the new whitewater launch on the Carson River. Geotourism holds tremendous potential for Carson City, and it will be exciting to watch the progress our community makes in creating a world-class destination for outdoor enthusiasts and train buffs alike.

Bicycle Commuter Classes

Commuter Education Classes for Bike to Work Week!

Just in the last week, I’ve seen several incidents of unsafe cycling around town. Most notably, I’ve had cyclists riding against traffic straight toward me on my narrow share of the road. I’ve also seen many examples of riding the sidewalks. These riders are just trying to be safe, but in reality, they are riding unpredictably and could cause serious accidents. Thankfully, a little bicycle safety education can go a long way to keeping you safe on the road.

Can you spot the safety hazard in this photo?

Muscle Powered‘s Dan Allison will be giving two bicycle commuter classes this week. These events do not depend upon each other, you may take one or both. Come down and learn some cycling skills for next week’s Bike to Work Week (May 17th- 21st)! There is no charge, both classes are FREE.

Commuter Bike Rodeo, Thursday, May 13, 5:30–7:00PM, Curry & Third parking lot

Learn and practice skills for safe and enjoyable bike commuting. Bike and helmet required – you will be riding your bike and must sign a League of American Bicyclists educational course waiver. This class works for beginners and is a good refresher for experienced bicyclists. Limited to 10 people – sign up by emailing LCI instructor Dan Allison at allisondan52@gmail.com.

• starting/stopping
• straight line/gears

• rock dodge
• avoidance weave
• and for fun, a slow race

Bike Month 2010 Announcement

Spring is just around the corner, and that means it’s time to start thinking about Bike Month in May! Carson City will be observing Bike to Work Week May 17th – 21st, which places the event a bit later in the month than last year. The plan is to spread out the events throughout the entire month, with some activities before and after BTWW. Last year, we stacked events back to back leading up to BTWW, and it was exhausting! I think most people were burned out by the end of the two week celebration. I know I was! So expect more breathing room this year between events. The plan is to keep the momentum going after BTWW is over, and KEEP people on their bikes.

Bike Month is Coming in May 2010

It’s also time to start thinking about building your Corporate Challenge teams. We had a fantastic challenge last year! People were really excited about this event. Last year Carson City Corporate Challengers completed 1,240 trips by bicycle or by walking, and there were 3,978 miles walked or ridden through the week! I expect this year to be even bigger.

Bike Month 2010

  • Social Rides and Gatherings
  • Bike to Work Week
  • Educational Classes
  • Basic Repair and Maintenance Classes
  • Corporate Challenge
  • Movie Night
  • Party at the Firkin and Fox on Bike to Work Day on May 21st. Live music, beer, and bike and prize raffle.

West Carson Cruiser Ride
May will be chocked full of fun bicycle events.

Last year we had a lot of help from volunteers. If you’d like to help out, or have some good ideas for events, Muscle Powered would like to hear from you. Stay tuned for a Bike Month meeting.

Bike to Work Week Meeting

We plan to have a Bike to Work Week meeting this Thursday night at 6:30 PM at The Feisty Goat Pub. We want to go over what we’ve accomplished so far, and fill in the event calendar so we can reserve the required venues.

I’d like to also say thank you to all of you that have volunteered to help out so far! It’s my hope that after this next meeting, we should have a list of things that people can help out with.

Hope to see you there!

-Jeff

Recent Meetings and Happenings

Here’s a look at some of the recent meetings and happenings.

A couple weeks ago, a few of us from Muscle Powered attended the Carson Valley Trails Association Annual Meeting. I was expecting a dozen people in a conference room, but when we arrived, we entered a packed gazebo with 100 people or more! We were on time, but did not even get a seat. The CVTA had an impressive display of all the trail work they’ve done on Carson Valley’s west side, notably the Jobs Peak Ranch and Fay Luther Canyon trail network. Having lived in the Carson Valley for over a decade, I am grateful for all the work they’ve done. Before these trails came along, it was next to impossible to gain access to the mountains without sneaking through barbed wire and no trespassing signs.

The Jeff’s with Kerstin, President of the CVTA

It was refreshing to see how much support this organization is receiving in the form of volunteer trail work, and tens of thousands of dollars in donations and grant money! We left the meeting inspired, and talked all the way home about how we could bring some of the CVTA’s ideas and energy to Carson City’s west side. We envision a sustainable, protected, multi-use trail system that spans Kings Canyon, Ash Canyon, Vicee Canyon, and Combs Canyon.

Interesting fact: CVTA volunteers pick up 100lbs of dog poop off the trail network per week! Anyone who has been to “Pooh Corner” in Ash Canyon knows how fast this stuff piles up.

At the Feisty Goat
Bike Month Kick-Off Meeting the Feisty Goat Pub

Last Thursday was the kick-off meeting for May’s Bike Month. Six of us showed up at the Feisty Goat Pub for a beer and brainstorming session. We came up with a lot of good ideas, and plan to have another meeting soon. Hopefully next time we’ll pick up the many people that expressed interest, but missed this first meeting. Check the Calendar Tab at the top for upcoming meetings and events.

Briefly
Bike Carson in the Nevada Appeal

If you read the Nevada Appeal, you may have noticed Bike Carson in the Recreation section. For the past few weeks, a snippet from one of the posts here has appeared in the paper. This has been a great way to reach more people, and I’m starting to get feedback from people that don’t normally read the blog. It does make me a little nervous though, because I’m always afraid I’m going to sound stupid outside the little world of this blog.
