Earth Day 2017 was a day filled with all types of activities allowing people to show their appreciation for the planet they call home. There were marches to attend, speakers to listen to, classes on gardening, and trail work to be done. One such Earth Day activity was the Muscle Powered Trash Mob which took place early in the day from 8-9 am Saturday morning.

In keeping with the Earth Day theme, the equipment for the Trash Mob was transported to the site via bicycle.

In a tremendous show of force, a record 39 volunteers attended the one-hour cleanup which took place adjacent to the Freeway Multi-Use Path on the north side of Carson City. Representatives from the Carson High School Mountain Bike Team (Senators Cycling) were there along with several other volunteers, many of whom have been engaged with Muscle Powered through the regular hiking and walking programs that Muscle Powered leads in the community. By the time it was all over, approximately 400 lbs of garbage was removed from the area. The Carson City Parks, Recreation, and Open Space department assisted with the effort by taking the bagged garbage to the local dump, while local photographer, Brad Coman, took pictures at the event that hit the front page of the Nevada Appeal. All of these helping hands prove that Trash Mobs are truly a community effort.
