CALL-TO-NORTHERN NEVADAN ARTISTS
March 30, 2017
Request for Qualifications (RFQ): Artist Designed Bike Racks for Carson City, Nevada
Overview: The Carson City Visitors Bureau in partnership with Muscle Powered is seeking artists’ qualifications for the design of five (5) bike racks at high visibility locations in Downtown Carson City. Five (5) locations along Carson Street have been selected for immediate design and fabrication to debut at Carson City’s Off-Road Epic Rides June 16-18, 2017. All bike racks will become part of Carson City’s public art collection.
Project Intent: In an effort to improve transportation infrastructure and to enhance the visual aesthetic throughout Carson City, this project will support and encourage bicycling within Carson City while building the city’s public art collection.
Project Details: Each freestanding, sculptural bicycle rack must be designed to accommodate a locking mechanism for bikes. Finish must be low maintenance, ie: stainless steel or powder-coated, durable, weather-resistant coating.
Design Award:
Selected artists will be contracted to design one to three (1-3) bike racks. The award for each unique and functional bike design is $500. Artists will be required to visit their assigned installation site(s) in Carson City to take pre-design measurements, gain valuable site-specific inspiration from Muscle Powered sponsors, and ensure compliance with the Carson City Public Right-of-way Policies. Final designs will be reviewed by a Public Art Project Panel for engineering feasibility, aesthetics, and relevance to location prior to award payment.
Fabrication Budget:
Local welders will be contracted through a separate process with a budget of $1000 per bike rack to cover all bike rack materials, welding labor, and possible coating/painting. Artists will be paired with welders directly in order to communicate their designs. Carson City Public Works will be responsible for the transportation and installation of all bike racks.
